Low Cycle
UPS Backup: Low-cycling applications
require UPS backup power only occasionally, from once a month
to two or three times a week, depending on the quality of the
power infrastructure. When a low-cycling application is served
by traditional lead-acid battery backup systems, long-term financial,
environmental, maintenance and reliability issues can result.
We at VYCON see our advanced flywheel technology as a crucial
solution for this growing market.
Low cycle events occur when critical equipment experience voltage drops (as in the case of turning on equipment which has been idle, creating a short-term power sag) or when the grid disappears (as in the case of blackouts). In these applications, a UPS is placed at the input line of the building to provide clean power while the DC bus voltage is actively monitored by the VYCON flywheel energy storage solution preventing voltage drops or voltage loss (in the case of genset ride-through) by maintaining the DC bus on the UPS system and therefore, allowing operations to continue without interruption.
GenSet Ride-Through: The NFPA 99 stipulates that for Emergency Power Systems, GenSets have to be able to assume load within ten (10) seconds. The VYCON DC product is the perfect reliable source for providing power during these short durations. Historically, batteries have been used with UPS’ for this purpose, however, history also has shown batteries to be unreliable and require high maintenance. If you cannot afford your system to go down, why purchase a battery solution when there is a better alternative? The VYCON DC product is the reliable source of DC power for your UPS when you need the GenSet ride-through during those utility outages.
Battery Hardening: Another low cycle application to take advantage of the quick, instantaneous response of VYCON’s DC product is Battery Hardening. EPRI performed a study that indicates 98% of all utility disturbances last less than 10 seconds. The VYCON DC product will respond to all disturbances at the DC bus lasting less than fifteen (15) seconds, and when operated in parallel to Lead-Acid batteries, the VYCON DC product becomes the first line of defense against these kind of disturbances. In these applications, the batteries experience a chemical discharge only after the flywheel has exhausted its stored energy. And, since batteries have a limited cycle life, the VYCON DC product extends the battery’s life by taking care of 98% of the discharges.
