UPS applications
The power cuts off. Quickly, a huge bank of lead-acid batteries sends a surge of emergency power to vital circuits, while an emergency generator gets up to speed. The process is called ride-through, and for many years, businesses around the world have been taking this ride. To the relief of many, that ride is coming to an end.
Flywheels can, in many applications, replace traditional batteries. They can also perform in applications where batteries fall short, and can be used in tandem with battery systems.
GenSet Ride-Through: NFPA 99 regulations for Emergency Power Systems stipulate that GenSets must be able to assume load within ten (10) seconds. Historically, banks of lead-acid batteries have been used for emergency power, although such systems, to achieve high reliability, require high maintenance. By contrast, the VYCON VDC product—in a fraction of the older system’s footprint—handles the same tasks with quickness and reliability.
Battery Hardening: For applications without generator sets, the VDC can be operated in parallel with Lead-Acid batteries. In this configuration, the VDC product becomes the first line of defense, allowing the batteries to be saved for extended power outages. And since batteries have a limited cycle life, the VDC product significantly extends a battery’s life by taking care of over 98% of the discharges.
